Fire Department
Serving Ridgefield Since 1897
The Ridgefield Fire Department has proudly protected the Town of Ridgefield for more than 125 years. Founded in 1897 in the aftermath of the Great Main Street Fire of 1895, the department was born from a community commitment to never again be unprepared for emergencies.
Today, the Ridgefield Fire Department is a combination career and volunteer, all-hazards emergency response agency providing fire suppression, emergency medical services, rescue operations, hazardous materials response, and fire prevention services to the community.
Our Mission
To protect lives and property through skilled, compassionate all-hazards emergency response, prevention, and service.
A Combination Department, One Team
The Ridgefield Fire Department operates as a unified combination department, bringing together 36 career firefighters and a dedicated volunteer force. Career firefighters are staffed 24 hours a day across two fire stations, ensuring rapid-fire, rescue, and EMS response anywhere in town, while volunteer members provide critical operational capabilities, support, and community connection.
This combination model preserves Ridgefield’s long volunteer tradition while meeting the demands of a modern, growing community.
Fire Suppression, Rescue, and All-Hazards Response
The Ridgefield Fire Department responds to:
- Structure and brushfires
- Motor vehicle collisions
- Hazardous materials incidents
- Fire alarms and investigations
- Severe weather and storm events
- Technical and water rescue incidents
- Life safety and fire prevention activities
- Community service and support
Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
Emergency medical response represents the majority of the department’s call volume. Ridgefield Firefighter/Paramedics and EMTs provide paramedic-level Advanced Life Support (ALS) and transport services, delivering hospital-level care at the patient’s side.
The department has earned state and national recognition for excellence in cardiac care, including designation as a HEARTSafe Community and multiple American Heart Association Mission: Lifeline® awards. These outcomes reflect a sustained commitment to training, quality improvement, and coordination with regional hospitals and dispatch partners.
A Department Shaped by History

Community, Tradition, and the Future
Beyond emergency response, the Ridgefield Fire Department maintains a strong connection to the community through public education, CPR training, fire prevention programs, and long-standing traditions such as the Firemen’s Carnival and community events.
While the department continues to modernize facilities, equipment, and training, its foundation remains unchanged: service to the community, teamwork, and readiness to answer the call any time, any place.
