Ridgefield Fire Department Launches Free Opioid Overdose Rescue Kit Distribution Program

As part of its growing commitment to community health and safety, the Ridgefield Fire Department is now offering free opioid overdose rescue kits to the public, made possible through support from the Connecticut Department of Public Health.

These kits contain Naloxone (Narcan)—a medication that can rapidly reverse the effects of opioid overdose—along with a CPR barrier mask, instructions for responding to an overdose, and information about addiction treatment and crisis resources.

“This program allows us to equip people with the tools they need to save a life before a 911 call is even made. It’s a vital part of our broader Community Risk Reduction strategy,” said Fire Chief Rommie L. Duckworth.

The rescue kits may be left behind at the scene of a suspected overdose, given to friends, family members, or bystanders who request them. Community members may also stop by Ridgefield Fire Headquarters at 6 Catoonah Street during regular hours to pick one up—no questions asked.

This initiative reflects growing awareness of the need for proactive, compassionate public health interventions amid rising overdose risks across Connecticut and beyond. “While emergency response remains our core mission, community prevention is crucial” Chief Duckworth added. “Every life we can help save, whether through CPR training, sepsis awareness, or overdose response, is a win for our community.”
