Mechanic

Full time (40 hours/week) with mandatory overtime
Must get CDL within six-months of hire, if not already CDL holder
Salary Range: ASE Certified Mechanic -$80,308 to start plus OT; Non-ASE Certified - $75,982 to start plus OT  


Description:
Under general supervision, performs skilled mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of Town automobiles, trucks, heavy and light equipment (both diesel and gasoline powered), emergency service vehicles and small motors.


Essential Job Functions:

  • Performs maintenance and repair of automobiles, trucks and other heavy construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Performs moderately complex repair work involving the setting up of test equipment or use of special tools.
  • May trouble-shoot codes in on-board computers and makes necessary repairs to affected systems.
  • Plans and organizes work procedures using repair manuals, charts, Scan Tools, laptops, and experience.
  • Operates vehicle or equipment, or uses lift or jack to analyze, test, inspect and determine cause of malfunction. Uses mechanic's hand tools and power tools to remove, disassemble, and repair, rebuild or replace defective parts or units.
  • Performs the vehicle maintenance and repair of emergency vehicles including police vehicles, fire apparatus, and ambulances.
  • Maintains power mowers, trimmers, chain saws, pumps, and related power equipment.
  • Utilizes a service truck to make emergency and non-emergency roadside repairs.
  • Answers two-way radio and telephone as required and orders parts from approved vendors to perform repairs.
  •  Must be available for all storm events throughout the year, including plowing and salting. Must be able to document repairs performed for record keeping purposes.

Qualifications:

  • Graduation from standard high school or trade/vocational school with three (3) years' experience as a skilled mechanic in the repair and maintenance of automotive, heavy truck and heavy construction equipment. Must be able to get their Connecticut Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brakes, tanker endorsements within six-months of hire. 
  • EVT, ASE Master Mechanic automotive diesel certification a plus.        
  • Knowledge of materials, methods and techniques used in the maintenance of automotive and heavy public works equipment.
  • Knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic and electrical principles as applied to heavy trucks, heavy equipment and automobiles. Must be proficient in the use of PC based Scan Tools and laptops in the process of diagnosing vehicle trouble codes and system faults.
  • Proficiency in welding and metal fabrication to perform repairs on various plows and machinery. Previous experience as a mechanic for emergency apparatus and vehicles.
  • Ability to understand and carry out instructions furnished in oral and written form.
  • Must possess physical ability to utilize respirators as required by OSHA regulations.
  • Must be able to lift 70 lbs and perform physical labor associated with heavy truck and equipment repair.
