Animal Control Officer
Description: The Animal Control Officer is responsible for enforcing animal control laws and ordinances, protecting public safety, promoting animal welfare, and responding to animal-related complaints and emergencies. This position requires regular interaction with the public, law enforcement agencies, veterinarians, animal shelters, and other community partners.

- Enforce local and state animal control laws, regulations, and ordinances
- Respond and investigate complaints involving stray, lost, injured, neglected, abused, or dangerous animals
- Respond to animal bites and conduct investigations related to rabies control and quarantine requirements.
- Patrol areas to identify and address animal-related issues
- Prepare detailed reports, case files, and documentation of investigations and enforcement actions
- Collect, preserve, and document evidence for administrative, civil, or criminal proceedings
- Assist law enforcement, fire department, emergency medical services, and other agencies during emergencies involving animals
- Coordinate with veterinarians, animal shelters, rescue organizations, and wildlife agencies
- Participate in community outreach and public education programs.
- Responsible for feeding/watering/exercising animals of shelter
- Responsible for cleanliness of shelter area, animal confinement areas, and equipment
- Must be available for after-hours complaints
- Must attend and pass all required training classes as required by the Chief
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Regular attendance as required by this position
- Knowledge of animal behavior, handling techniques, and humane capture methods
- Knowledge of applicable animal control laws, ordinances, and regulations
- Ability to safely handle domestic animals and wildlife under a variety of conditions
- Ability to investigate complaints and gather factual information
- Ability to prepare accurate reports and maintain detailed records
- Ability to communicate effectively with the public, including in stressful or emotionally charged situations
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions independently
- Ability to use computers, records management systems, and standard office software
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with community members, law enforcement personnel, veterinarians, and other stakeholders
- Ability to lift and carry animals, equipment, and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds or more.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Ability to safely operate animal control vehicles and equipment.
- Ability to respond to emergencies at all hours as required.
- High School graduate
- Minimum of five (5) years full-time or part-time Animal Control Officer experience
- Possess a valid Connecticut Animal Control Officer Certification
- Successful completion of a Police Background Investigation
- Valid Driver’s License
- Successful completion of all Department-required medical examinations
- Must live within 25 air miles of the town border
Nonunion, Full-time (40 hours/week)
Monday - Friday 8:00 AM -4:00 PM (can be adjusted)
Overtime and on call pay for evenings, weekends, emergency calls and shelter needs
Salary Range: $65,000 - $73,800 (depending on experience)
